The Foreign Ministers of Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan called for reform of the UN Security Council on Wednesday, stating that this issue is more necessary than ever. The Security Council is a 15-member body that includes five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States — and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.
Veto Powers and Their Challenges
The permanent members of the Security Council have veto powers, which often prevent the implementation of resolutions, as the interests of one or more of them are in conflict. This situation has led many countries, including Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan, to emphasize the need to reform the structure of the Security Council to address global issues more effectively.

Main Topics of the UN General Assembly
On the second day of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, topics such as artificial intelligence, the US and Israel's war in Iran, and climate change will be highlighted as main agenda items. Additionally, Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Dario Amodei (CEO of Anthropic), and Clement Delangue (CEO of Hugging Face) will participate in an emergency Security Council meeting. This attendance is due to international concerns about the slowing development of artificial intelligence before this technology potentially spirals out of control.
In this context, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, criticized these requests on Tuesday, labeling them as part of a "globalist agenda." He dismissed warnings that this technology could destroy humanity within a few years.
Impacts of the Iran and Ukraine Wars
As tensions in Iran have escalated to a boiling point, Iranian and American representatives have met on the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York, but no peace agreement has been reached yet. This war has had direct military impacts on neighboring countries and global economic repercussions.
The issue of the Ukraine war will also be discussed at this meeting, with plans for a Security Council session in the morning and a speech by Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, in the afternoon. Zelensky emphasized the need to end the four-year war with Russia during his meeting with Trump on Tuesday.
Criticism of Fossil Fuel Companies
Antonio Guterres, the former UN Secretary-General, harshly criticized fossil fuel companies, condemning them for their behavior towards the Earth's atmosphere as a "open sewer pit." He also pointed out that since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, five major Western oil companies have made nearly half a trillion dollars in profit, while only $34 billion has been invested to help developing countries adapt to climate change.
During this meeting, Andrei Barnham, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, also addressed issues related to misinformation and the need to establish global standards for artificial intelligence. He stated that the UK must tackle divisive and destabilizing forces.
