German political parties are examining potential names to succeed Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the current president, whose term ends next year. In this context, Ines Klaus, a lawyer and legal expert, has emerged as one of the prominent names. The election of the new president will take place on January 30, and for the first time, a woman may be appointed to this position.

Support for Female Candidates

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, has commented on the importance of electing a woman for this position during his trip to Asia, stating that this issue should be seriously considered. So far, no woman has been elected as President of Germany, and this matter is recognized as a milestone in the country's history.

Currently, discussions are ongoing regarding the candidacy of Ines Klaus as well as Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian Parliament. Aigner, who has received multiple endorsements from various parties, is recognized as a serious candidate. She is also supported by Markus Söder, the head of the Bavarian Social Party.

The Presidential Election Process

The presidential election in Germany is conducted in a special manner. A federal convention brings together representatives of the Bundestag and elected representatives from 16 state parliaments. Right-wing parties such as the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), as well as the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is recognized as a coalition partner, hold the majority in this convention. This means they can select their candidate without needing support from other parties.

Merz has also emphasized the need for a systematic process in selecting Steinmeier's successor and stated that no decision has yet been made in this regard. In the upcoming CDU board meeting on November 9, discussions will take place regarding individuals who should be nominated.

Public Expectations and Polls

While nearly 74% of Germans are unlikely to celebrate Halloween, discussions about presidential nominations remain heated. These polls indicate that young people are relatively more interested in this celebration.

German political officials are considering various names for the presidency, and Ines Klaus is regarded as one of the serious candidates. Given that Germany has never had a female president, this election could be a milestone in the country’s political history.
