Navanatham 'Noy' Pilly, a human rights lawyer from South Africa, received the Nobel Peace Prize 2026 for her efforts in promoting peace and international law. Pilly was born in 1941 in Durban and grew up under the apartheid regime. She was one of the first women of Indian descent in South Africa to practice law and worked in defense of anti-apartheid activists and against the conditions of discriminatory prisons.

Professional Background and Achievements

After the end of apartheid, Pilly worked as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she helped establish important legal precedents that recognized sexual violence as an act of genocide. She also served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

Pilly recently chaired a UN commission that investigated human rights violations in Israel and the Palestinian territories. This commission analyzed and reported on the conditions following military actions and human rights violations in the region.

Nobel Prize and Its History

This week, the Nobel Prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature were also announced. The week will conclude with the announcement of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on Monday. Other award winners include Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegman, and George Nagel in medicine, Francis Halzen in physics, and Ann Carson in literature.

Last year, Maria Coriana Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in promoting the democratic rights of the people of Venezuela but was unable to attend the award ceremony. Her daughter, Ana Coriana Sosa Machado, accepted the award on her behalf and read the speech her mother had prepared for the occasion.

In her speech, Machado emphasized that democracy is essential for peace and that an important lesson Venezuelans can offer the world is that to achieve democracy, one must fight for freedom.
