Kansas has emerged as an unexpected battleground in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections. This state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in 94 years, but Republican Senator Roger Marshall is now facing a close challenge from Pastor Adam Hamilton, the implications of which will extend beyond Kansas, as Republicans seek to maintain their Senate majority this November.

Polls and Competitive Status

A poll from Emerson College/Nexstar Media showed support for Hamilton at 45% and for Marshall at 43%. In comparison, Marshall won the 2020 general election with 53% of the vote, 11 points ahead of his opponent.

In this race, Marshall has a financial advantage. His campaign has reserved $2.3 million for advertising as of October 2, while Hamilton's campaign has reserved only $590,000. Including outside groups, nearly 10 times more advertising has been reserved to support Marshall compared to Hamilton.

The Impact of Trump's Policies and Challenges

Marshall also has the recent voting history of Kansas on his side, where former President Donald Trump won by a 16-point margin in the 2020 election. However, it seems that the sentiment of Kansas voters towards Trump has changed since the 2020 election, and association with the current administration may harm Marshall more.

Experts believe that dissatisfaction with the economic situation, rising gas prices, and immigration attacks in the state have turned what seemed like a clear outcome into a tight race. According to Alessandra Midlowood, a political science professor at Wichita State University, the biggest challenge for Marshall's campaign is the President of the United States.

Polls show that only 40% of Kansas voters are satisfied with Trump, and nearly half of them have identified the economy as their main issue. The current situation is such that the Republican Party has made significant investments in this state, indicating a tight competition ahead.
