The Supreme Court of India is set to hear the complaint of Rahul Gandhi, the main opposition leader in the country, and several other opposition lawmakers regarding a widespread action that has so far removed over 130 million names from the country's electoral rolls.

Details of Gandhi's Complaint

Gandhi's complaint was registered on Monday at the end of a protest march towards the Supreme Court, where thousands, including members of the opposition bloc 'India', student leaders, activists, and civil society members, gathered in a heavily barricaded part of the capital. This march is the latest action in a series of protests calling for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, due to allegations of manipulating electoral rolls in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Narendra Modi.

Reactions to the Allegations

The Election Commission of India, whose neutrality has come under scrutiny, has denied these allegations, stating that this action, referred to as 'Special Intensive Revision', addresses the removal of deceased, relocated, and duplicate voters, and also prevents the entry of 'illegal foreign migrants'. On the other hand, Modi's party has also rejected these accusations, describing the protests as attempts to create 'chaos'.

Meanwhile, neither Modi nor Kumar has publicly responded to this issue. Gandhi's complaint calls for a temporary suspension of the nationwide revision of electoral rolls along with an audit of the removal of voters and safeguards against removals without prior notice.

Political and Social Developments

The Supreme Court is also set to address a group of complaints regarding this month's restrictions on protests known as the 'Cockroach Movement'. This movement has particularly emerged against the Election Commissioner due to public outrage over the widespread removal of voters. Meanwhile, India's External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, is traveling to the United Arab Emirates and has met with Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Recently, three Indian citizens lost their lives in a fire at an apartment in the city of Bochum, Germany. Reports from German media indicate that authorities are investigating the possibility of arson and have arrested a resident of the building on suspicion of murder.
