The United States suspended its consular services at its embassy and consulates in Brazil due to security concerns starting Friday. The country did not provide details about the nature of the security concerns and did not indicate any connection to the Brazilian presidential elections taking place on Sunday.

Closure of the Australian Embassy

The Australian embassy in Brasília also announced that it would suspend its services starting Friday due to the U.S. warning and advised Australian citizens to avoid U.S. diplomatic missions. The U.S. Department of State also stated that it is working closely with Brazilian officials to address security concerns.

Tension in U.S.-Brazil Relations

This news comes at a tense time in U.S.-Brazil relations. Brazilians will head to the polls on Sunday to participate in the first round of the presidential elections, which appears to be a return to the contests of 2022. Polls indicate that this race is statistically between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the leftist president seeking a fourth term, and Flávio Bolsonaro, the right-wing senator and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Jair Bolsonaro, a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, was sentenced to 27 years in prison last year for attempting to alter the results of the previous presidential election in Brazil. Trump has not yet endorsed any candidate, but there are concerns that he may interfere in the election results.

U.S. Democratic lawmakers expressed serious concerns in a letter to Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, in late September, stating that these actions undermine strategic relations with Brazil.

Lula and his allies have warned about foreign interference in the elections, referencing tariffs and Washington's summer efforts to send U.S. officials to Brazil to "discuss electoral integrity." In response to whether he would support Bolsonaro in the elections, Trump said, "We are looking at the whole situation and monitoring the elections closely."

Brazil is surrounded by neighbors who have shifted to the right, and the outcome of the elections, which may be determined on October 25, will shape the country's foreign policy direction.
