The U.S. and China have agreed to reduce tariffs on goods worth $60 billion. This agreement includes products ranging from American coal to Chinese toys.

Details of the Agreement and Its Scope

The announcement of this agreement on Sunday was made under the framework of "30-for-30," which roughly includes $30 billion in U.S. exports to China and $30 billion in Chinese exports to the U.S. The U.S.-China Business Council, established during Donald Trump's visit to Beijing in May, has recommended that more favorable tariffs be considered for "non-sensitive" products.

The proposed reductions could benefit various goods, including live horses, camels, and fishing equipment. The White House has not yet specified the extent of the tariff reductions and their implementation timeline, although China's Ministry of Commerce has stated that tariffs on about 90% of products on each list will return to "most favored nation" status.

Implications of the Agreement and Reactions

This agreement is the latest effort to reduce economic tensions between the two global superpowers after tariffs rose to unbearable levels last year. The agreement was signed just days after a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump in Washington, D.C., where they agreed to extend the trade truce until January 10.

Trump is attempting to use tariffs to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China and bring manufacturing back to America. U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer stated in a statement that the trade deficit with China has decreased by 40% since Trump took office.

However, the tariff war has also harmed both economies and forced Chinese exporters to seek other markets. Some American business owners have also reported that sudden changes in tariffs have increased costs and forced them to consider relocating production from China.

Products Affected and New Conditions

This agreement proposes tariff reductions for 77 categories of Chinese products, including bedding, garden umbrellas, car seats, fishing hooks, and holiday decorations. It also considers tariff reductions on 1,619 categories of American products, including various foods, wooden products, and medical equipment.

The White House also announced that China has agreed to import at least 10 million tons of coal from the United States in 2027 and 2028. This agreement generally reflects an effort to create more favorable conditions for Chinese exports to the United States.
