This alert was issued as British police arrested five men on Sunday on suspicion of offenses related to explosives and terrorism near RAF Fairford airbase in southwestern England. This base has drawn attention due to U.S. military activities in the area.
Threat Level in the UK
Previously, the UK raised its national terrorism threat level from "substantial" to "severe" in April. This decision was made following an anti-Semitic attack in London, which was declared a terrorist incident by the police. The "severe" level means that "an attack is highly likely."
The UK Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) has confirmed that the five individuals are British nationals in their twenties living in London. Investigations at the scene are ongoing, and authorities are pursuing new lines of inquiry.
UK Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, stated in a BBC radio program that it is still too early to speculate about motives during an active investigation. He also mentioned a possible connection to Iran, saying: "We know that Iran and its proxies want to harm us."
Gloucestershire police, responsible for the area where the airbase is located, were dispatched after receiving a report from a concerned citizen about three suspicious vehicles heading towards the base. The citizen, a farmer, reported that the road was blocked due to three white vans.
Following this report, armed forces were dispatched to the scene, and five men were arrested on suspicion of offenses under the Explosive Substances Act and Section 5 of the Terrorism Act. Gloucestershire police also evacuated residents from 85 households near the incident site.
