The U.S. government described the security situation created at RAF Fairford in England as a "very serious situation" and appreciated the cooperation of British officials. This military base is one of the major U.S. Air Force bases in Europe and has drawn attention due to its proximity to the Persian Gulf.

Concerns of the President and Secretary of State

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern over the judge's decision to grant conditional release to five suspects under investigation. These five men, all in their twenties and British citizens, were detained near the base on Sunday while covering their faces at the time of arrest.

Marco Rubio stated in an interview with Fox News that this security situation is a "very serious situation" that appears to be linked to a foreign actor. He emphasized that he did not want to discuss further details, but the fact that some of these individuals have been released on bail has raised concerns among many.

Details of the Incident and Officials' Reactions

The police seized three suspicious white vans in this incident and evacuated about 85 households near the base. Bomb disposal teams were dispatched to the scene, and residents returned to their homes immediately on Monday. Initial reports indicate that the materials in these vehicles were not usable explosives, but counter-terrorism and bomb disposal experts are still investigating the site.

Lawrence Taylor, head of the British counter-terrorism police, referred to "significant interests" regarding the connection of this incident to geopolitical contexts and stated that investigators are exploring every possible angle. One of these angles is the possibility that this incident was carried out by representatives or individuals acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign government.

Taylor also pointed out that the conditional release of these men does not indicate any sign of the end of investigations against them. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting also clarified that decisions regarding conditional release are matters for police and prosecutors, not politicians.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham held a security meeting titled "Cobra" on Monday. This military base has been used not only in past wars, including the Iraq wars and NATO bombings in former Yugoslavia, but also recently in limited operations in Iran.

Residents of the Cotswolds have also witnessed an increased security presence and activity at the base in recent days. This situation is due to close military relations and structures established during World War II. Various air bases in southern England are used by the U.S. military, raising concerns about security and potential risks.
