The U.S. government signed a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland on Tuesday aimed at enhancing security in the Arctic region and the North Atlantic Ocean. This agreement was signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly by Donald Trump, Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede, and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Development of U.S. Military Presence in Greenland

The security agreement, which Trump announced earlier this month, will help strengthen the U.S. military and security presence in Greenland. Under this agreement, the United States is set to establish a new military base in Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and another base on the eastern coast of the island in Mestersvig.

In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump announced that the United States would "immediately begin the process of developing a significant military presence in appropriate locations and constructing two very important military bases." He described this agreement as "an extraordinary deal" for Europe and the United States, adding: "This will also be extraordinary for Greenland."

Emphasis on the Sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland

According to this agreement, the United States will "be allowed to expand and modernize its activities" at the space force base. The agreement also emphasizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland. This agreement was signed after months of pressure from Trump, who has consistently stated that he wants the United States to take control of Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark and a member of NATO.

Following this agreement, U.S., Danish, and Greenlandic officials collaborated for months to address Trump's security concerns regarding the resource-rich island. This disagreement raised concerns among the majority of Greenland's population and created tensions between the United States, Denmark, and the European Union, which immediately increased their security drills and financial support for this polar island.

The future of Greenland has become a focal point of global attention due to commercial interests and expectations for resource development in the future. At least two-thirds of its land lies within the Arctic Circle, where melting sea ice has opened new shipping routes.

Although the United States has played a prominent role in Greenland for decades, its military presence on the island has decreased since 1945. Of the thousands of troops stationed at 17 bases and facilities, only about 200 remain at the Thule Air Base in northwestern Greenland.

Múte Bourup Egede, the Prime Minister of Greenland, described the agreement as a "win-win arrangement." Last year, the Danish Parliament passed a law allowing the establishment of U.S. military bases in Danish territory and expanded an agreement that had been signed with the Biden administration in 2023.
