The word 'Ragebait' was introduced as the word for German youth in 2026 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. This term refers to social media content that is deliberately designed to make people angry, frustrated, or morally outraged.
Definition and Importance of 'Ragebait'
'Ragebait' (in English: rage bait) refers to social content created with the aim of attracting more attention and engagement from users. Social media algorithms like those of Instagram, TikTok, and X reward energetic interactions. Posts that lead to heated discussions with angry comments or are widely shared due to emotional reactions are considered higher engagement, resulting in more visibility of this content in users' feeds.

Voting Results
'Ragebait' was among the three nominated words for the word of German youth in 2026, alongside 'Peak' and 'Crashout'. As of August 28, about one million young people aged 11 to 20 voted for their favorite word. 'Ragebait' won with 36.5% of the votes, while 'Peak' and 'Crashout' received 33.8% and 29.7% of the votes, respectively.
Arthur Reiser, marketing director at PONS Langenscheidt, stated, "The close result shows that all three words have a strong place in the vocabulary of Generation Z and Alpha." He added, "'Ragebait' was a frontrunner from the start, but only by a narrow margin throughout the voting period."
Other Meanings of the Nominated Words
The word 'Crashout' means to fall asleep quickly due to exhaustion, but in modern slang, it refers to experiencing a severe emotional crisis and losing control over anger or stress. This word is typically used with a sense of humor to emphasize that the reaction may be somewhat exaggerated.
The other word, 'Peak', refers to something that is in its best state. In German youth slang, this term is used as an adjective: "That football was peak" or "This comedy is peak."
PONS Langenscheidt has been selecting the word for German youth since 2008, and since 2020 this selection has been conducted through online voting. Offensive, racist, or discriminatory words are not allowed. The public naming and voting process for next year's word will begin in the summer of 2027.
Last year, the word 'Das crazy' and in 2024 the word 'Aura' were chosen as the words for German youth.
