The Youth Olympics in October 2026 will be the first Olympic event held on African soil, and this time the host is Senegal. This event will feature around 2,700 young athletes from across the continent competing in 153 different disciplines. These young athletes have participated in last year's African Youth Games and are now preparing to compete in this significant event.
Message from the President of Senegal
Makhtar Diop, the President of Senegal, stated during the arrival ceremony of the Olympic flame: "We have been chosen as the host of this event, and the youth of Africa look at us with pride." He emphasized that this event is an important step for global sports in Africa. In recent years, Africa has witnessed larger sporting events, including the first major road cycling competition in 2025 and the announcement of the first World Athletics Championships to be held in Kenya in 2029.

Great Opportunities for Africa
Malik Diouf, the head of a marketing agency and founder of the Dakar Sports Summit, pointed out that hosting the Youth Olympics is a victory for Africa and opens new doors for hosting major events on the continent. He believes that this event could pave the way for hosting the Summer Olympics in Africa. Diouf said: "We have Olympic champions and record holders, and we are deserving of hosting the Olympic Games."
To attract the attention of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Senegal decided to utilize and upgrade existing facilities instead of building new ones. The Iba Mar Diop Stadium, which will host the athletics competitions, is being considered as a training venue for athletes ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Diouf stated: "By using these facilities and hosting international events, we can maintain the standards of these stadiums."
In addition to the social and economic impacts of the Youth Olympics, Diouf believes that this event will go beyond infrastructure and will involve the development of roads, hospitality, security, and broadcasting. He said: "Life continues after these games, and we must think about the optimal use of the resources showcased during these games."
The significance of these games goes beyond making history in Africa. In May of this year, IOC President Kirsty Coventry raised concerns about future Youth Olympic plans and the hosting of these events after the 2028 Winter version. Diouf expressed hope that Dakar would be memorable and that future decisions regarding hosting the games in 2030 would be reconsidered.
From October 31 to November 13 of this year, Senegal has an opportunity to showcase its capabilities to the world and must host this event in the best possible manner.
