TIME held its Impact Dinner on Thursday in Chicago, where four individuals involved in supporting survivors of domestic violence shared their insights.
Impactful Speeches
The four speakers at this event, organized by the Allstate Foundation, included Donna Frato, a photographer and human rights activist; Tommy Vincent, a writer and speaker and head of the Vincent Country lifestyle brand; her husband, Troy Vincent, who is the Executive Vice President of Football Operations at the NFL; and Ashlyn Jade, an activist and actress. Ashlyn Jade was recognized in 2017 as one of the "Silence Breakers."
Donna Frato began her remarks by honoring her mother, a survivor of domestic violence, stating, "I am loyal to survivors of domestic violence and sex trafficking. Survivors are the ones leading this movement." She recounted the story of a woman named Elizabeth Lindberg, whose well-known photograph titled "Behind Closed Doors" depicts her experience.
Personal Experiences and Commitment to Support
In his speech, Tommy Vincent shared his personal experiences facing domestic violence, stating, "I am a successful survivor of domestic violence, and I have a mission to normalize this conversation, not the behavior." His wife also spoke about the impacts of domestic violence on their family, emphasizing that those closest to the problem are often the best helpers in finding solutions.
Tommy Vincent continued that he and his wife are working with organizations such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline to build "a home for survivors" where their voices can be heard and their experiences can help shape solutions.
Ashlyn Jade also addressed the silence of men in the face of violence by other men, stressing that everyone who witnesses violence must raise their voice. She said, "There is no such thing as a silent bystander, because if you truly want to help survivors, you must be an active participant."
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7. Call 1-800-799-SAFE or visit TheHotline.org.
