The Trump administration has recently announced its intention to form a special artificial intelligence (AI) force and appoint a special representative to manage this area. This news follows widespread criticism of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and concerns about its implications for society.

Concerns About Artificial Intelligence

In early September, developers and decision-makers at major AI companies warned about the increasing power of these models and called for a slowdown in the pace of technological development. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, in one of his controversial posts on the social media platform "Truth Social," wrote: "Artificial intelligence is taking over the world and destroying humanity, and this is a conspiracy." He also pointed out that never in the history of business have industry leaders called for regulations that would lead to their own destruction.

Trump further stated that he has no intention of slowing down the growth of this industry. In his post, he announced his plan to introduce an "AI czar" and emphasized that only individuals with high intelligence should apply for this position. He did not provide specific details about the duties and powers of this individual or the resources that will be allocated to this position.

This move by Trump may be an attempt to undermine the initiative of Gavin Newsom, the Democratic Governor of California, who recently announced plans to form a commission to regulate technology companies based in Silicon Valley. Newsom is looking to have these companies create an emergency switch to halt AI if it goes out of control.

The current competition in artificial intelligence between the United States and China is intensifying and is being compared to the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1960s. Trump aims to give American companies more freedom to ensure they remain leaders in this competition.

Concerns also exist regarding China's dominance in artificial intelligence, as this could lead to an increase in Beijing's power as the sole superpower. In a discussed article, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warned about the consequences of unchecked AI development and pointed out the implications of the AI competition between the United States and China.

Amodei believes that if the United States severely limits its AI capabilities on the assumption that China will do the same, and ultimately China exits this agreement, it could lead to their geopolitical dominance.

Since 2017, China has issued a plan for developing a new generation of artificial intelligence and set goals to achieve global dominance in this field by 2030. These regulations are enforced by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and ensure that AI models align with the official political doctrine.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Xi Jinping, the President of China, at a state dinner on Thursday, and the topic of artificial intelligence is likely to be at the top of the agenda for this meeting. The United States has previously proposed creating a framework for sharing information about serious risks posed by artificial intelligence.
