The United States government, led by Donald Trump, has decided to change the name of artificial intelligence to super intelligence (Super Intelligence). This name change follows Trump's statements on his social media platform, "Truth Social," where he described it as incorrect and opaque.

Name Change and Social Media Poll

In his statements, Trump indicated that the terms "superior," "extreme," or "excellent" are better alternatives for artificial intelligence. In a three-day poll on social media, Trump's supporters voted 65% in favor of the name "super intelligence," allowing him to announce this name change at the United Nations General Assembly.

Scientific and Industrial Reactions

However, the technology industry has yet to respond to this new term. Experts warn that super intelligence is a term meant for a future where technology could surpass humans in all areas. Pedro Domingos, a professor of computer science at the University of Washington, stated, "Most artificial intelligence is not super intelligence; it is just different intelligence."

The history of the term "artificial intelligence" dates back to 1956 when it was introduced at a summer workshop at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. At that time, the goal of the naming was to distinguish between human natural intelligence and human-made intelligence. However, some experts have criticized this name, deeming it misleading.

Public and Political Concerns

Public concerns about artificial intelligence are growing. In a public survey, about half of respondents in six countries, including the United States, Canada, and France, called for a halt to further development of artificial intelligence to mitigate associated risks. Additionally, another survey showed that nearly 90% of Americans are more concerned than excited about artificial intelligence surpassing human intelligence.

These concerns have reached the United States Congress, and Senator Bernie Sanders introduced a bill last week to permanently ban the development of uncontrollable super intelligence. This bill also calls for a halt to advanced artificial intelligence development until federal oversight and testing are established.

Future Challenges and Technological Advances

Despite the name change, experts believe that changing the term to super intelligence cannot alleviate existing concerns about artificial intelligence. They warn that this name change may lead to increased worries and affect public perception regarding the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.

While current artificial intelligence models are advancing, a future where these systems can improve themselves automatically still seems distant. Elon Musk has predicted that artificial intelligence learning could become automatic by the end of this year or by 2027. However, even then, these systems will not be fully self-improving.

As a result, policies and political decisions are likely to play a larger role in the acceptance of the term "super intelligence." Trump signed an executive order at a technology summit with industry leaders directing U.S. government agencies to begin using this term. However, experts believe that this name change is unlikely to be accepted in the scientific and industrial community.
