Donald Trump is now in a complex and sensitive position facing two interconnected key decisions. First, how to support Saudi Arabia following the deadliest attack in the kingdom since the war began; an attack that has not only caused heavy human casualties but has also transformed the security equations of the entire region and placed unprecedented political and military pressure on Riyadh.

Security Challenges for Trump

The recent attack on Saudi Arabia, recognized as the deadliest single incident in the Persian Gulf since the war began, has placed Riyadh in a position that requires immediate and tangible support from its traditional allies, particularly the United States. Trump must decide how this support will take shape: will it be in the form of advanced air defense systems, an increase in U.S. military presence in the region, or stronger security guarantees? Each of these options comes with its own costs and risks.

Iran's Role in Regional Equations

Alongside this issue, Trump's second decision relates to how to deal with Iran. Iran, as a key player in regional equations, has always been at the center of American policymakers' attention. Any response to the recent attack will inevitably have consequences for relations with Tehran. Trump could resume the maximum pressure campaign, intensify sanctions, or even put limited military options on the table.

Shahbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, emphasized during a cabinet meeting regarding Pakistan's mediation between Iran and the U.S. that Islamabad will continue its sincere efforts in this regard and welcomes the efforts of other brotherly countries. This position of Pakistan reflects regional efforts to create channels for dialogue and reduce tensions. Additionally, a senior Qatari diplomat has stated that there is still a possibility of reaching an agreement to end the war, although its scope will be limited.

In this situation, Trump must weigh whether military and economic pressure on Iran, along with support for Saudi Arabia, could bring Tehran to the negotiating table or, conversely, lead to an escalation of conflict and a complete closure of diplomatic channels. The combination of these two decisions poses a profound strategic challenge for Trump. Supporting Saudi Arabia without smartly managing the Iran issue could lead to an escalation of the cycle of violence.
