The U.S. government announced that significant progress has been made in establishing a military base in Poland. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, said on Thursday in a post on his social media: "Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend, Karol Nawrocki, the President of Poland, major progress has been made in establishing a U.S. Army base in Poland."
Discussions on Permanent Military Presence
In August, Warsaw announced that it was negotiating with Washington about establishing a permanent U.S. military presence in Poland. Trump continued, saying: "If this happens, the location will be announced soon. This is a historic step for the great alliance of the United States and Poland."
This announcement comes as the Trump administration has begun a formal review of its military presence in Europe. This has raised concerns among allies that the United States may reduce its military presence in the region.
Emphasis on Strengthening Defense Cooperation
Karol Nawrocki, the President of Poland, thanked Trump on social media platform X and stated that Poland "is ready to continue its efforts to strengthen defense cooperation." He added: "I can assure you that the Polish government will do everything possible to provide the best possible location for the U.S. Army base."
Zbigniew Baginski, the head of the Polish President's office, described this announcement as "great news for Poland" and noted that it was released on the anniversary of the 87th year of the Soviet invasion of Poland.
In August, Pawel Szalecki, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland, said that his country is discussing the possibility of establishing a permanent U.S. base on its territory. He emphasized that "we have completed the initial stage of this process, and there is a political will that was expressed long ago."
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has been seeking to increase the presence of allies in the highest eastern points of NATO. Nearly 10,000 American soldiers are currently stationed in Poland, but most of them are present in the country on a rotational basis.
Poland's proximity to Ukraine and Russia is a key factor in the country's security strategy. Poland allocates about 5 percent of its GDP to defense spending and is striving to increase the U.S. military presence on its soil.
At the same time, Washington has strongly criticized several European countries for not allowing American forces to use NATO bases in the war with Iran.
