Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has clearly indicated in a recent comment that he does not see the war in Ukraine as a conflict with blame on both sides. He said, "Russia has actually been good in Ukraine." These remarks are concerning for residents of Kyiv, who have endured weeks of escalating bombings, as well as for Ukraine's allies in Europe, reinforcing growing worries that the United States is taking a stance in favor of Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, in this war.
Concerns of European Officials
Kaya Klas, the EU's chief diplomat, stated in a session at the European Parliament that American negotiators have been trying for nearly two years to force Ukraine to surrender. She said, "The reason Ukraine has not yet succumbed to Putin's demands is that Europe has provided significant support to it."
Trump's Position Duality
Some European officials and diplomats believe that Trump's change in stance relates to his personal preferences. David Lidington, a former UK cabinet minister, believes that "this is a personal matter" and Trump's self-serving tendencies towards dictators and autocrats are significant in this context. One government official who knows both well said, "Trump does not like [Volodymyr] Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, and this makes garnering U.S. support for peace difficult.
In recent days, Trump has heavily criticized Zelensky, accusing him of "not caring" and "not wanting to end this war." He has also suggested that Zelensky should be replaced as the leader or negotiator for Ukraine. These criticisms may hark back to an incident in 2019 when Trump asked Zelensky to cooperate in an investigation into Joe Biden, his political rival.
Challenges Facing Ukraine
For Ukraine and its European allies, the perception that nothing can change Trump's feelings about Zelensky is very disheartening. Zelensky recently warned that his country is facing increased civilian casualties due to reduced U.S. support, including Starlink and Starshield services. As Trump has intensified pressure on Zelensky, this has raised further concerns about Ukraine's future and the state of the war.
