Donald Trump, the President of the United States, recently announced an agreement to purchase Russian diesel, which leads to a temporary easing of U.S. sanctions against Moscow. This news has been met with strong criticism from Ukraine and European countries, with some considering it a betrayal of their allies.
Energy Agreements and Ukraine's Reaction
Trump also spoke of an "energy ceasefire" between Ukraine and Russia. Kyiv has stated that this issue was never raised with them and that they are not prepared to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure until Russia ends its assaults.

Political and Economic Impacts
Carlo Masala, a security expert at the Bundeswehr University Munich, stated that these developments indicate Trump's disinterest in supporting Ukraine and that he is more focused on influencing the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. Polls suggest that the Republican Party is likely to lose its majority in the House of Representatives, and Trump hopes to attract voters by lowering fuel prices with Russian diesel.
However, analysts believe that the amount of diesel received from Russia is so small that it cannot have an impact on prices in the United States. Thomas Jäger, an expert at the University of Cologne, mentioned that the anticipated diesel shipments wouldn't even meet one day's needs for the United States.
Concerns and Information Threats
Another concern in Kyiv is the U.S. threats to halt information sharing with Ukraine. This could have dire consequences for Kyiv, but European intelligence, especially from France, could help mitigate these impacts. The Ukrainian army has so far used French intelligence to conduct attacks against Russia.
On the eve of the U.S. midterm elections, there is widespread support for Ukraine among both Democrats and Republicans. The recently passed "Lindsey Graham" bill provides various tools for the President to sanction Russia and allows him to pressure Russian officials and financial institutions.
