The competition for the Senate seat in Texas has become highly competitive due to dissatisfaction with Donald Trump, the former president. Some Republicans believe that if the GOP fails in this election, part of the blame will fall on Trump.
Dissatisfaction with Trump and Ken Paxton's Challenges
Trump's low popularity ratings and his management of the GOP primary elections have increased the Democrats' chances of winning a statewide election in Texas. Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General and Republican candidate, is slightly trailing behind his Democratic rival, James Talarico, in the polls. Talarico has also outpaced Paxton in fundraising, which could benefit the Democrats in a state that the GOP did not expect to defend so fiercely.

Economic and Political Impacts on the Election
Mark Jones, a Texas political expert at the Baker Institute at Rice University, describes this competition as a "perfect storm" for the Democrats. He says, "You have a very unpopular Donald Trump in the White House and an economy that a majority of Texans view negatively. Additionally, Paxton is considered one of the weakest Republican candidates in modern history. In contrast, Talarico is recognized as a credible politician who can compete."
Trump has the financial resources needed to assist Paxton, as his affiliated PAC, MAGA Inc, had over $400 million at its disposal last summer. However, Trump initially showed reluctance to invest heavily in this race and expressed doubts in private conversations about the GOP's midterm election prospects. He considered that these resources might be wasted and referenced the historical failures of presidential parties in midterm elections.
Only after weeks of pressure from allies did Trump's PAC finally allocate $10 million for advertising in Texas to Paxton on September 5. At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Trump's support for Paxton was presented alongside criticisms of his appearance and television performance.
This race, which Republicans previously considered easy, has now become one of the most expensive and competitive races in the country. Steve Bannon, a former Trump strategist, says, "I don't think they fully understand what will happen when we lose the House and Senate. It will lead to facing some kind of investigations and impeachments every day."
The Senate race in Texas has drawn significant attention to Trump's political operations since late 2024. John Cornyn, a four-term senator and Trump's closest ally in the Senate, has gained less popularity among the party base due to his criticisms of Trump regarding the January 6 riots and his lack of support for him in the primary elections, despite voting 99% with Trump.
