Two people died in a bus accident involving a group of Filipino tourists in southern Germany. The incident occurred on Sunday morning on the way to Munich's Oktoberfest.
Details of the Incident
The bus was traveling from Milan, Italy, which has a large Filipino community. According to German police reports, there were 33 tourists on the bus when, at 5:41 AM local time, the vehicle veered off the A96 highway and overturned. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Six of the injured were quickly airlifted to nearby hospitals, one of whom was in critical condition. Two others were transported by ambulance to the hospital, and 22 others received treatment at the scene, with some being taken to the hospital.
Impacts and Investigations
The police have so far identified only one of the two deceased, a 58-year-old Filipino citizen. A local police spokesperson stated, "The situation is initially very chaotic, and establishing the facts is difficult." It took hours for the police to confirm how many people were on the bus.
In addition to the 33 tourists, two Italian drivers were also on the bus, neither of whom was injured in the accident. The police announced that the driver who was at the wheel at the time of the accident is now under investigation for involuntary manslaughter. The police spokesperson added, "This is standard procedure."
The cause of the accident is still unknown, and the police have stated that "the prosecutor's office has requested an expert report on the reconstruction of the incident to determine the cause of the accident. It is still too early to comment on this." More than 200 firefighters, doctors, and police were dispatched to the scene, and part of the highway was completely blocked for a time, but traffic was allowed to resume in the afternoon.
In recent weeks, several bus accidents have been reported. In early September, a Dutch bus had an accident in Switzerland, resulting in five deaths, and another accident on the A3 highway in Germany injured 30 people.
Munich's Oktoberfest is the largest beer festival in the world, attracting millions of tourists to the Bavarian capital each year. The festival, which lasts for nearly two weeks, features large beer tents, traditional Bavarian food, live music, and entertainment, drawing visitors from Germany and around the world.
This year, Oktoberfest runs from September 19 to October 4. Organizers announced that halfway through, about 3.8 million people have attended the festival, which is about 300,000 more than last year at the same time.
