The UK Treasury Minister, Matt Reynolds, announced on Monday that his experience in the City of London "does not create a conflict." These remarks come amid speculation about an increase in taxes on banks in the upcoming budget.

Experience in the City and Financial Knowledge

Reynolds stated in an interview that he has "learned a lot" about financial services since working as the CEO of TheCityUK. This experience was gained after losing his seat in 2019, and he returned to Westminster in the 2024 general election.

He added: "I cannot describe myself as an economist, but this experience has helped me increase my knowledge of economics and finance and view issues from the perspective of large financial institutions, which I think is a good thing."

Dealing with New Taxes

The City of London is heavily lobbying to prevent sudden taxes on banks, while the Labour Party is trying to balance the budget. In this context, Reynolds pointed to the exit of billionaire Chris Rokos, who pays £330 million in taxes to the UK annually, emphasizing that "we need to have clear regulations."

He continued: "We want to create the best conditions for growth and entrepreneurship, but we must adhere to the regulations, and those who live here must pay taxes."

Global Economic Challenges

In response to questions about the details of the budget to be announced in October, the Treasury Minister emphasized that the government "cannot be inactive" and must act against financial insecurity arising from international crises. He stated: "We are currently facing significant global economic problems and a very difficult geopolitical situation, especially the war in the Middle East and also Ukraine."

Reynolds noted: "But we cannot be inactive in the face of these issues, and we will do everything we can to give families and businesses some breathing space." He also referred to previous actions taken by John Healey in this regard.
