Ukrainian forces announced on Wednesday that their field efforts have encountered difficulties due to the loss of access to military internet services from Starshield, which serves as a vital communication line against Moscow's attacks.
Starshield Service Limitations
Starlink, as a satellite internet service in low Earth orbit, has assisted Ukrainian forces. However, the military version of this service, Starshield, developed for the U.S. Department of Defense, has affected Ukraine's field operations due to speed limitations in its use. Sergey Beskrestnov, a military technology expert, stated that these limitations have been imposed on the Starshield military service package and have led to the failure of several military operations. He also emphasized that Ukrainian defense forces have not received any warnings regarding this matter.

Political Tensions and Their Consequences
Tensions between the United States and Ukraine are rising as Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly criticized Donald Trump's plan to import diesel from Russia. This move has also caused divisions within the Republican Party. In an interview in Britain, Zelensky expressed regret that Ukrainian forces are facing challenges with Starlink services and information, noting that he hopes these limitations are just a mistake. He also stated that if this issue continues, human lives will be at risk.
Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, emphasized in response to this issue that Starlink and Starshield are two different systems, and the use of Starshield services is under the control of the U.S. government. He stated that any limitations on speed or use of these services are determined by the U.S. military and ultimately the President of the United States.
However, a senior U.S. official told the media that the Trump administration had no involvement in these alleged limitations. Meanwhile, the National News Agency of Ukraine reported that the functionality of Starshield has now been resumed and returned to its full capacity.
Starshield is a program developed by SpaceX based on the capabilities of Starlink satellites and launches. This system is designed for government use, with its initial focus on three areas: Earth observation, communications, and payload hosting.
Thus, while satellite technology itself is not military, it enables the military to communicate and gather a real and multidimensional picture of the battlefield. The presence of over 10,000 satellites in the Starlink network and fewer in Starshield allows these systems to connect at high speeds.
