The U.S. midterm elections will take place on November 3, 2023, and American citizens will vote to elect their representatives in Congress. These elections do not directly decide who will be in the White House, but focus on the election of representatives in both houses of Congress, namely the House of Representatives and the Senate.

How Midterm Elections Are Held

Midterm elections are held every four years, halfway through presidential terms. In these elections, all 435 members of the House of Representatives are elected, each representing a congressional district. Additionally, 35 seats in the Senate and elections for governor are held in 36 states.

In other words, these elections are very important for determining representatives at the state and federal levels and can impact local and national policies. Currently, the Republicans, Donald Trump's party, hold a majority in both houses of Congress, but this majority is very slim and may change in the upcoming elections.

Impact of Elections on Trump's Policies

Voting in these elections can be seen as a referendum on Trump's presidency. While polls indicate that Trump's popularity is at its lowest, it is expected that Democrats may be able to gain a majority in the House of Representatives. According to polls, Democrats only need four more seats to achieve a majority.

In the Senate, the Republican majority currently stands at 53 seats, while Democrats hold 45 seats. In the event of a tie in voting, Vice President J.D. Vance can cast the deciding vote. Therefore, if Democrats can gain four more seats in the Senate, Trump's power to change policies, especially in domestic and foreign areas, will be diminished.

The presence of candidates like James Talarisco from the Democratic Party in Texas, who is competing with his Republican rival Ken Paxton in the polls, indicates that these elections could be particularly decisive in key states. Additionally, in the gubernatorial elections, there is a possibility of electing a Black woman as governor in Minnesota and Georgia, which could be a historic transformation.
