Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, welcomed leaders and representatives from seven countries including Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary on Friday to strengthen cooperation at a regional summit at the Bukovel ski resort in western Ukraine. This summit has been named 'Eight Carpathians' and was held to discuss and exchange views on security, energy, and economic relations.
Focus on Russian Threats
This summit took place amid growing concerns about increasing hybrid threats from Russia, including sabotage, cyberattacks, and misinformation. Russia's nighttime attacks on several regions of Ukraine have also resulted in fires and casualties.

Zelensky described the summit in a Telegram message as an "important beginning" for strengthening relations among the participating countries. He said, "We agreed to work together in the areas of security, energy, logistics, and cross-border economic cooperation." He also emphasized that the Carpathian region is recognized as one of the reliable foundations of Ukraine's defense.
Economic and Trade Agreements
It was expected that nearly 550 business representatives would attend this summit, and investment and trade agreements worth 1 billion euros ($1.15 billion) would be signed. In his speech, Zelensky pointed out that this is a good start for cooperation in the fields of energy, logistics, infrastructure, and inter-regional agreements.
Zelensky also announced that Ukraine has benefited from a €3.3 billion financial support package from the European Union to enhance its defense capabilities. This package includes funding for the purchase of missiles and drones.
Dominik Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, announced in a video posted on the social media platform X that Poland is part of this major project and has prepared a new and "significant" aid package for Ukraine. He stated that no one can change his mind that Poland must support Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
Zelensky also thanked Poland for its new aid package, saying, "Ukraine and Poland are neighbors, friends, and strong partners, and we have a common enemy." This summit and new collaborations could help strengthen security and stability in the region.
