The West Nile virus is spreading widely across the European Union and has penetrated new areas of the continent. Health officials announced on Thursday that 1,715 cases of the virus have been reported this year, and 130 people have lost their lives. This virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites and has raised significant health concerns due to its outbreak in various countries.

Expansion to New Countries

Greece, Italy, and France have been identified as the countries most affected by the West Nile virus, but health officials have stated that the virus is spreading towards Northern Europe. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the recent identification of cases in humans and animals in Belgium and the Netherlands indicates that the virus is now circulating in more northern areas, and this trend is likely to continue in the coming years.

Risks and Preventive Measures

The Netherlands has reported 59 human cases and Belgium 15 cases of the West Nile virus this year. This virus is asymptomatic in 80% of cases in humans, but it can lead to fever and, in severe cases, neurological diseases and even death. Therefore, taking preventive measures to reduce the risk of contracting the West Nile virus is highly recommended.

Health officials suggest that anyone living in or traveling to areas affected by the virus can reduce their risk by using mosquito repellents, wearing loose and long clothing at night, and using window screens, mosquito nets, or air conditioning.

Given the increase in cases and the spread of this virus, it is important for people to be aware of this health threat and take necessary actions to maintain their health. Health recommendations should be considered as part of an overall approach to combat this virus to prevent its spread.
