Zach Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, mentioned the influence of his party on national policies in his speech in Brighton, stating that the party can help change the direction of policies. In this speech, he referred to Andy Burnham's recent victory at Number 10 Downing Street and called for people to vote for the Green Party to steer the Labour Party towards better policies.
Emphasis on changes and pressure on the Labour Party
Polanski, in his second speech as the leader of this leftist party, emphasized that the Green Party acts as a reformer, not just an obstacle. He said: "Voting for the Greens means witnessing changes in the Labour Party" and added: "We can change the government in between general elections." He also referred to the ongoing pressures from the Green Party on the Labour government, stating that the party has been able to control the worst instincts of the government and guide them towards the right policies.

Challenges facing the Green Party
The Labour Party's defeat in the local elections in May, due to voters shifting towards the right-wing Reform Party and also the Greens, led to Burnham's resignation from the premiership. Polanski now has to decide what pressures to exert on the Labour Party. He told the audience: "You wouldn't be surprised if I said that I am not hopeful about the persistence of the Labour Party."
Zoe Garbett, the mayor of Hackney who was elected in the local elections in May, stated that there are still key differences with the ruling party, especially on issues related to Gaza, climate, and rent control. However, she acknowledged that Burnham has made it harder for the Green Party.
In his speech, Polanski addressed topics such as rent control, the boycott of Palestine, and new drilling in oil and gas fields, and it seems he is trying to clarify where the new battleground is. He said: "Our differences with this Labour government could not be clearer. While they are playing with our planet, we are committed to science." He also criticized Labour representatives for voting in support of the boycott of Palestine, stating that Green Party representatives did not join this vote.
Polanski is trying to present the Green Party as a more complete version of Burnham's proposal to end neoliberalism. He seems to want to focus on the cost of living and environmental crises to regain support. He also pointed out the challenges facing the party and stated that they must look for an opportunity to bring the Green Party back.
