Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, warned on Friday at a press conference in Brussels that if his country falls to Russia, up to 20 million Ukrainians may seek refuge in Europe. Zelensky stated: "Russia is killing us, and Ukrainians are under pressure to leave their country. They do not want to stop."

Refugee Crisis in Europe

In the early days of Russia's full-scale invasion, millions of Ukrainians left their homes, and this crisis is recognized as the largest and fastest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. According to Eurostat statistics, today more than 4 million Ukrainians live under temporary protection status in EU countries, with the largest populations in Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Economic Challenges in Ukraine

Zelensky's warning comes as Ukraine faces another harsh winter amid Russian bombings. According to International Monetary Fund forecasts, Kyiv is facing a budget deficit of about $30 to $35 million next year, which will remain even with the €90 billion loan that Brussels agreed to last year.

The President of Ukraine traveled to Brussels to meet with European leaders and strengthen financial support for his country. While the European Union is recognized as Ukraine's main supporter, this bloc's list of priorities is heavily crowded due to rising energy costs, upcoming elections, geopolitical crises, and a deadlock in its €2 trillion budget.
