Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated on Saturday that Russia is trying to create a nationwide blackout in Ukraine through attacks on energy infrastructure. This issue is particularly concerning ahead of the winter season, and Zelensky called for increased pressure from the international community to prevent this action.
Attacks on Energy Infrastructure
Zelensky said, "Russia is trying to leave millions of our people without electricity and heat." He emphasized that this situation is very critical and requires immediate action. According to news sources, Russia has used over 320 drones and cruise and ballistic missiles in its latest attacks on Ukraine's energy. These attacks have caused power outages for about one million people.
Response to the Lifting of U.S. Sanctions
Meanwhile, Zelensky referred to the lifting of some key sanctions against Russia by the U.S. government and considered it a factor in the continuation of the attacks. He said, "The lifting of American sanctions and the reduction of pressure on the aggressor only encourages him to continue his attacks." These remarks came after an executive order was signed by Donald Trump, the President of the United States, which lifted some sanctions. This decision was described by Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's special representative for economic cooperation, as a historic moment.
Zelensky also pointed out the neglect of Lindsey Graham's proposal, a Republican senator from the U.S., which aimed to increase pressure on Russia to end the war. He called this proposal very effective and necessary, stating that every vote for it matters.
Consequences of War and Energy Crisis
The war in Ukraine and ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure have led to a severe humanitarian and economic crisis for the people of this country. As the cold season approaches, the need for electricity and heat for the residents of Ukraine becomes increasingly important. Zelensky called for global solidarity and more support to address this crisis and emphasized that pressure on Russia is essential.
