Ukraine is heavily reliant on Starlink internet services managed by SpaceX. This system plays a central role in communications, reconnaissance, and drone operations for the Ukrainian armed forces. Recently, Kyiv has reported several instances of disruptions and limitations in using these services.

The Vital Role of Starlink in the Ukraine War

Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has extensively utilized Starlink satellite internet services. This system enables military personnel to continue communication and information exchange even when infrastructure is damaged or mobile networks are down.

According to reports from the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich, around 50,000 Starlink devices were active in Ukraine in 2025. These devices function as tools for receiving and sending information, establishing communications on the battlefield. They are also used to transmit orders between command levels and receive drone imagery.

New Disruptions and Limitations

The importance of the Starlink network becomes particularly clear in light of cyberattacks at the beginning of the war. Analyses indicate that the KA-SAT satellite system previously used by Ukraine was targeted just hours before the Russian attack, and Starlink quickly emerged as a critical option.

Recently, SpaceX has imposed a limitation on the speed of Starlink terminals in Ukraine, which reduces communication speeds for Ukrainian fast drones. This limitation could have negative impacts on Ukraine's drone operations, as if communication with the drone is lost, live images will no longer be transmitted, and real-time control will not be possible.

If the Starlink network is limited or even cut off, it will not only affect communications but also impact drone operations and other military activities in Ukraine. However, Starlink and its military counterpart, Starshield, are just one of the essential components of Ukraine's defense system.

Ukraine also benefits from reconnaissance data received from Western partners, which includes information about Russian airstrikes, troop movements, and anti-air positions. This information aids Ukraine in air defense and offensive operations. The combination of these two elements, namely reconnaissance data and Starlink services, enables Ukraine to respond quickly to targets and routes.
