Ben Wallace, the British Defense Minister, announced the country's commitment to increasing military spending to 3% of GDP by 2030 and stated that he is fully confident that this goal will be achieved. This announcement follows the budgetary targeting made last week by Jeremy Hunt, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Details of the New Targeting

The British government intends to provide more details next year on how to finance this goal. Additionally, there are commitments to spend 3.5% of GDP in line with NATO agreements by 2035. Currently, the UK allocates about 2.6% of its GDP to military spending.

Challenges in Financing

Wallace stated during his recent trip to Brussels and Berlin that this increase in spending sends an important message to both industry and the UK's allies and rivals. However, he dismissed criticisms regarding the lack of a clear plan to finance this increase. Reports indicate that an additional £11 billion in spending is needed to meet the 2030 target.

The Defense Minister also expressed concerns about private financing solutions and emphasized that the UK has learned important lessons from private financing schemes. He said, "We do not want to return to private financing schemes that have caused problems. However, there are other ways to attract private capital that can benefit everyone."

In strengthening collaboration with industry, Wallace highlighted the importance of closer ties with key allies like Germany. He also raised concerns about delays in defense projects such as GCAP and stressed the need to accelerate programs.

Need to Accelerate Defense Programs

The British Defense Minister, pointing to increasing threats, called for a faster pace of industrial investments. He said, "As threats are increasing, we and our NATO allies need to spend more, and industry must also keep pace and accelerate." Wallace emphasized the necessity of establishing long-term contracts with industry to reduce investment risks and stated that this would help maintain production lines.
