Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester and a key figure in the UK Labour Party, called for Britain's return to the European Union in his lifetime at the recent Labour Party conference. Burnham emphasized the importance of public opinion at this conference, stating: "You have to make sure that the people, the people of Britain, are in charge." He also referred to the promises of Brexit, saying that these promises have not been realized.

Criticism of Brexit Outcomes

On Monday, Burnham stated that the outcomes of Brexit have been far tougher than what was proposed during the referendum campaign. He remarked: "We received a harder Brexit than what was proposed in the referendum campaign. This has weakened our economy and also reduced our control over immigration, which may come as a surprise to some." These remarks from Burnham come as he previously stated in an interview with the Sunday Times that accepting free movement with the European Union should not be sidelined in future negotiations.

UK and EU Meeting

The upcoming meeting between the UK and the European Union will take place next month, but this meeting will mainly focus on technical reforms regarding the current relationship and will not address larger questions about the future relationship between the UK and the EU. Burnham and other Labour Party members believe that we should have closer ties with the European Union and are thus calling for a review of immigration and economic policies.

Burnham's criticisms of the Brexit outcome and his emphasis on the need to return to the European Union reflect a shift in attitude towards the Brexit issue within the Labour Party. This party has previously focused more on supporting Brexit, but it now appears to have adopted a different approach.
