Multiple wildfires in California on Friday forced residents of the Malibu area to evacuate. The hot, dry winds have caused the fires to spread rapidly.
Wildfire a Serious Threat to Youth Care Facilities
The Bryson fire, which has burned approximately 81 acres (200 acres), poses a serious threat to a youth care and rehabilitation center in Los Angeles County that was evacuated last night. Officials have urged residents of the Encinal Canyon area near Malibu to leave, and other parts of the Santa Monica Mountains are also under evacuation warnings.

The National Weather Service has predicted that stronger winds overnight could intensify the fires. The Bryson fire was reported around 5 PM local time on Thursday (0000 GMT Friday) north of Malibu, with large plumes of black smoke rising from the hills that were visible from a distance.
Los Angeles County officials have asked residents to pay attention to emergency instructions and, if possible, check on neighbors who may need assistance. They have warned that if residents feel unsafe due to the fire, they should not wait for an official warning and should leave the area quickly.
This fire is spreading about 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of the area affected by the Palisades fire in January 2025. Additionally, in Azusa, north of Los Angeles, about 200 firefighters are battling a fire that has burned more than 16 acres (40 acres). Progress on this fire was halted by the afternoon, and evacuation orders for a neighborhood in the San Gabriel Mountains have been downgraded to warnings.
Furthermore, the fire at the Camp Pendleton military base near San Diego has also burned over 3.8 square kilometers (1.5 square miles) and poses a threat to buildings and infrastructure. Utility companies have cut power to approximately 127,000 customers across California to reduce the risk of sparks from electrical equipment.
The Palisades and Eaton fires in January 2025 resulted in 31 deaths in the Los Angeles area. Predictions indicate that the current winds will not be as severe as those of previous fires.
