A court in Hamburg on Thursday sentenced two men to several years in prison for conspiring to target Jewish leaders in Germany on behalf of Iran's intelligence services. The two defendants were found guilty of espionage and attempted murder.
Details of the Conviction
One of the defendants, a 54-year-old man from Denmark with Afghan roots, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. The other defendant, identified as the mastermind behind the attacks, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Prosecutors stated that this man received orders directly from the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

This man is also accused of recruiting his accomplice, a 43-year-old Afghan man residing in Denmark, to carry out one of the attacks or to find someone capable of doing so. The 43-year-old defendant was also tasked with finding a weapon to carry out one of the attacks.
Attack Plans and Targets
The two defendants, in addition to targeting two prominent figures, specifically planned to carry out an arson attack on a kosher store in Berlin. The court stated that one of the targets of this conspiracy was Joseph Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. The other target was Volker Beck, a politician from the Green Party and head of the German-Israeli community.
Following the allegations against the two men, Volker Beck called for the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador and consular officials from Berlin. He stated: "The lives of Jews and the commitment to a Jewish and democratic state are constantly threatened by murder and attack by the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran on German soil."
The German Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador after the arrest of these individuals by Danish authorities. In response, the Iranian embassy in Berlin issued a statement rejecting the allegations as "baseless claims made at the behest of Iran's enemies."
These events have drawn significant attention and heightened concerns about threats against the Jewish community in Germany. Analysts believe this case could have profound implications for German-Iranian relations and may lead to increased tensions between the two countries in the future.
