David Proude, U.S. Ambassador to China, defended President Donald Trump on Friday and emphasized the importance of continuing dialogues during Trump's official visit to China. This visit, notably marked by the presence of Xi Jinping, President of China, ended without achieving significant agreements.
Challenges in China-U.S. Relations
Proude discussed the challenges and complexities of relations between the two countries in an interview with Fox News. He said: "The old metrics in our relationship with China are not easily measurable and, in many cases, do not yield tangible results." These remarks reflect the cautious approach of the U.S. government in dealing with China, which has always sought engagement and dialogue.
Emphasis on Dialogue
Proude also pointed out that the "best outcome" from the recent meeting is the continuation of dialogues. He added that these dialogues could gradually lead to more effective agreements and improved relations between the two countries. In this context, he emphasized the importance of striving to better understand each other's needs and concerns.
Criticism regarding the lack of specific agreements during this visit has brought about multiple critiques. Some analysts believe that the absence of serious agreements may indicate a weakness in U.S. foreign policy. In contrast, Proude dismissed these criticisms, stating that international relations, especially with a country like China, require time and continuous effort.
During this visit, Trump and Xi discussed trade, security, and climate change issues, but it seems that no specific agreements were signed in these areas. This situation could raise concerns about the future of relations between the two countries.
Ultimately, Proude emphasized that "we must continue to engage in dialogue to achieve positive and sustainable outcomes." These statements reflect America's determination to maintain constructive relations with China, even in the current challenging and difficult circumstances.
