Donald Trump, the President of the United States, strongly rejected the idea of creating a global body to oversee artificial intelligence in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. He stated that the United States "rejects any efforts to create a globalist plan to control" artificial intelligence. These remarks were made a day before the arrival of Xi Jinping, the President of China, at the White House for talks that may have artificial intelligence as one of the main topics.
U.S. Leadership in AI Innovation
Trump emphasized in his remarks that the United States is a leader in artificial intelligence innovation and continued his criticisms of regulatory efforts regarding this technology. He said, "The destructive or potentially dangerous capabilities of this technology are a 'deception' and we must support these innovations." He also warned that attempts to regulate artificial intelligence could harm American efforts and allow China to surpass the United States.

Renaming to "Super Intelligence"
Trump deemed the term "artificial intelligence" incorrect and called for it to be renamed "super intelligence," urging other countries not to use the term "artificial." He stated, "This technology is not fake, but truly amazing." According to Trump, all U.S. documents and hopefully global documents should be changed to the new name "super intelligence." He added, "In other words, welcome to the new world of super intelligence."
Alongside these remarks, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, 22 countries approved a declaration stating that artificial intelligence should remain under human guidance, oversight, and control, and proposed the creation of a global regulatory regime. Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland and one of the organizers of this document, stated that he believes "it will be in the interests of both China and the United States to have some kind of protective barrier."
