An oil refinery in Novokubyshevsk, Russia was targeted in a drone attack this morning. Vyacheslav Fedorichev, the governor of the Samara region, identified Ukraine as the perpetrator of this attack, stating: "During the terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure in our region and country, the wicked enemy from Kyiv launched an unprecedented number of drones against us. Fortunately, there were no casualties, which is the most important point."

Details of the Attack and Russia's Response

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the country's air defense forces shot down 1,043 Ukrainian drones over Samara and 18 other regions of Russia during the night. Fedorichev urged residents not to disclose information about targeted locations, but independent Russian media reported a fire at the oil refinery. This refinery produces jet fuel for the Russian military and, according to the Russian oil company Rosneft, has a production capacity of about 8.8 million tons of oil per year.

Unofficial Agreement Between Ukraine and US Pressure

On Thursday, reports emerged that Kyiv, under pressure from US President Donald Trump, agreed to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries. This unofficial halt is expected to continue until after the US midterm elections on November 3. Ukraine had previously paused its attacks on refineries for 72 hours, but the Kremlin continued to bomb Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, told reporters in Kyiv: "This action did not help. All the talk was just rhetoric, and no one thanked us for those three days."

As of Friday morning, Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for this recent attack, but some Ukrainian military and industrial forces indirectly referenced it. One Ukrainian defense company named Fire Point, which produces long-range drones used by Kyiv to bomb targets in Russia, wrote in a post on Telegram: "Little drone, how did you get there? The Novokubyshevsk oil refinery welcomes Ukrainian guests."

Russia's Retaliatory Attacks on Ukraine

In response to this attack, Russia launched ballistic missiles and over 100 drones at Ukraine, resulting in one death in Kyiv and power outages for 350,000 people in Dnipro. These attacks indicate an escalation of tensions between the two countries and the ongoing energy crisis in the region.
