Ed Roman, former communications director at the British Embassy in Washington, has emphasized the need to strengthen diplomatic relations with potential presidential candidates in the United States. Following recent Republican defeats in the midterm elections, he has advised British diplomats to avoid provoking Trump while simultaneously expanding their relationships with Democrats.
The importance of knowing future candidates
In his first podcast interview after leaving government service, Roman reminded diplomats that they should engage with potential presidential candidates. He says, "If you are not doing this now, it is a bit late." He referred to his previous experiences and stated that the British Embassy in Washington is currently monitoring Democratic candidates and seeking relationships that could benefit Britain.
Diplomatic challenges in a new era
Roman emphasized that the global competition to establish diplomatic relations with future presidential candidates has increased. He referenced the efforts of other countries' embassies, including France and Germany, stating, "Every embassy is trying to build a network that gives them greater access." He also stressed the importance of knowing local politicians, saying, "Real politics in America happens at the state and district levels. Knowing Senate candidates ahead of time is always the key to success."
Roman, who worked under Karen Pierce, the former British ambassador, noted that the previous efforts of this team during the Biden administration have been beneficial for Britain. He believes these efforts have made Britain more successful in trade negotiations with the U.S., even when Trump imposed tariffs on allies.
However, he warned of the uncertainty of the future, stating that the next presidential candidate may not clearly be Trump. He said, "This is a complete surprise that you always have to be aware of." Roman emphasized the importance of establishing diplomatic communications with a wide range of candidates, including those who may be part of the future cabinet or national security team.
Roman also pointed out that diplomats should seek to create relationships that are beneficial for future candidates and should not assume that Britain's historical connections will easily continue in the future. He said, "For every political generation, you always have to propose your case again."
Finally, Roman advised diplomats to act cautiously and avoid the temptation to publicly display their relationships with future candidates. He said, "This should be done confidentially and with a focus on human relationships. Doing this in a careful manner is the key to success."
