Europe is looking to appoint a representative to participate in direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, to achieve a peace agreement in Ukraine. This decision has been made due to the importance and complexity of the situation in the Ukraine war and the necessity of direct communication with the Kremlin.
The Necessity of Appointing a Representative
Petra Pavel, the Czech Republic's ambassador, pointed out in an interview that Putin does not recognize the European Union as a serious authority and is reluctant to engage in dialogue with European leaders such as Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas. He emphasized that the European Union needs to identify an individual or group that can represent Europe in the negotiations.

In recent weeks, Donald Trump has raised concerns for Ukraine and its European allies with his comments about Ukraine and his willingness to talk to Putin. This issue has reignited discussions about Europe's need for a direct line of communication with the Kremlin in Brussels and beyond.
Proposed Figures for Representing Europe
Among the proposed figures, Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland, has been mentioned as an attractive option. He is noted for his good relations with Trump and Finland's experience in dealing with Russia. A European diplomat stated, "Stubb is a suitable option due to the Finnish understanding of Russia and traditional dialogues with the country."
On the other hand, Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, is recognized as another option who could play an effective role in the negotiations. In this regard, diplomats emphasize that the representative of Europe should be selected through separate dialogues and based on real needs, and should not be influenced by personal ambitions.
Currently, the European Union believes it must be present in peace negotiations, and therefore diplomats like Siebert and Pedro Loret from Costa's team should participate in these discussions. These diplomats also stated that Costa should begin his talks soon if he wishes to play a role in negotiations with Putin.
Ultimately, the European Commission has emphasized that the Union is currently present in peace negotiations and must also participate in discussions regarding security and welfare post-Ukraine war. This clearly indicates the necessity and importance of Europe's role in peace negotiations with Russia.
