The senior commander of France, Fabien Mandon, publicly acknowledged on Thursday in a meeting with lawmakers that the next-generation tank project between France and Germany (MGCS) has faced failure. This is the first time a French official has explicitly discussed the program's failure, which has long been the subject of much discussion and speculation.
Details of the MGCS Project
The MGCS project, which includes collaboration between French companies KNDS, German KNDS, Rheinmetall, and Thales, has faced serious challenges due to ongoing delays, industrial disputes, and political tensions in recent years. Mandon emphasized in this meeting that the project has deteriorated due to Germany's withdrawal from cooperation with France. He stated, "The outcome is not good. We had hoped to jointly build a future tank with Germany, but unfortunately, we must accept that Germany has withdrawn from this project."
Consequences and Reactions
This admission from the French senior commander comes just a few months after the sudden end of another significant defense program called the Future Combat Air System (FCAS). This program also failed to reach a conclusion due to similar issues and disputes between the two countries. However, Mandon, in response to a question from a National Rally representative about the term "failure," attempted to distance himself from the phrase, stating, "This is not a complete failure; this is an important decision by Germany, but our ground forces have been collaborating for several years to determine the features of the future main battle tank."
He continued, "This time is not wasted, but from an industrial perspective, this is not good news." A German defense official also did not provide a comment on this matter. This crisis in defense cooperation between France and Germany could have serious implications for the future of military and industrial collaboration between the two countries and indicates deeper challenges that exist in their relations.
