Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, deemed Donald Trump's agreement, the President of the United States, for diesel imports from Russia impossible for Germany and Europe. Merz called for tougher sanctions against Moscow in his statements and emphasized that this country will only engage in serious negotiations under pressure from global powers.

Criticism of Trump's agreement

Merz said: "We are aware of the agreement between the United States and Russia regarding diesel exports. Such a decision is impossible for Germany and Europe." He referred to Russia's attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure and called for more sanctions. Merz also expressed skepticism about Trump's statements regarding an immediate halt to attacks by Russia and Ukraine on each other's energy facilities, stating that Russia has responded with widespread attacks.

Germany's support for Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced that news about Trump's partial ceasefire was new to him, and the Kremlin has not confirmed that this agreement has been implemented. Merz confirmed Germany's support for Ukraine and stated that it will be discussed at the upcoming European Union meeting regarding efforts to achieve a fair and lasting peace.

In further political developments, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has begun coalition negotiations with the Green and Left parties in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These three parties, which secured 32 out of 71 parliamentary seats in the recent state elections, are preparing to reach a coalition agreement before the first parliamentary session on October 20.

Political developments in the SPD

Lars Klingbeil, the Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance of Germany, canceled his planned trip to India and stated that the Social Democratic Party needs to hold a new vote for party leadership. This announcement came after the resignation of Bärbel Bas, a fellow party member. Klingbeil did not comment on his candidacy in the upcoming elections but confirmed that other party officials also consider holding elections necessary.

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, appreciated the unprecedented sanctions that the European Union has imposed on Moscow, stating that these sanctions do not contribute to the continuation of Russia's aggressive war. The EU Foreign Ministers' meeting in Luxembourg was held to finalize the sanctions package, which includes sanctions against 1,600 individuals and companies related to the war in Russia.

Frankfurt Peace Prize

Philippe Sands, a French-British lawyer and author, received the Frankfurt Peace Prize. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier referred to him as a committed human being who tirelessly strives for human rights, justice, and mutual understanding despite the resistance he faces. In his speech, Sands made strong criticisms of Germany's inappropriate silence regarding Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
