Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, visited the Peace Village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea on October 30, 2023. During this visit, he stressed the importance of unity between the two Koreas and recalled the experience of German reunification. Merz said, “We hope that Korea will also one day have the opportunity to return to state unity.”

Meeting with South Korean Officials

During this trip, Merz told reporters that he had answered questions about the experience of German reunification in Seoul. He also emphasized the need to promote a rules-based trading order at the global level. While Merz was in South Korea, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, was in Beijing discussing trade disputes with Chinese officials.

In Beijing, Steinmeier emphasized maintaining the “win-win principle” in China-Germany relations and referred to the trade issues between the two countries. He said, “We come with the intention of preserving and strengthening the framework for good economic exchange between the two countries.”

Trade Pressures and Cooperation Paths

Germany has faced serious challenges in its economic relations with China in recent years, including an increase in the trade deficit that reached nearly 90 billion euros last year. Merz stated in Seoul, “Competition between the United States and China is increasing, and these changes in power dynamics affect all countries.”

Merz also pointed to the need to find solutions to trade problems and the necessity for closer cooperation with Asian countries. In his speech at the Asia-Pacific Trade Conference in Seoul, he said, “We want to offer opportunities beyond bilateral agreements.” He also took seriously concerns about the potential for new protectionism in Europe and promised to convey these concerns to officials in Berlin and Brussels.

Merz also referenced his visits to Singapore and Japan, emphasizing the need to establish a free trade agreement between the European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

This trip by Merz represents Germany's efforts to strengthen economic relations with Asian countries and improve the global trading order. As international relations are influenced by tensions and rivalries, Germany seeks to play an active role in shaping the economic future.
