German youth, under the banner 'Generation Z' (Gen Z regelt), have planned widespread protests in 21 cities across Germany including Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich on October 31. These protests are due to concerns over 'ineffective schools and austerity policies' as well as rising living costs, social inequality, mandatory military service, and climate change.

Background of the Protests and Inspiration from France

Recent protests in France, which were accompanied by violence and destruction of public property, have somewhat inspired German youth. These protests initially stemmed from student dissatisfaction with the educational system and soon evolved into larger gatherings involving unions and various groups. In this context, the 'Generation Z' website has explicitly stated that this initiative is 'against all forms of violence', whether against individuals or property.

The Role of Police and Security Concerns

The German police have stated that they are 'watchful and calm' and their goal is to protect the right to assemble and express opinions. However, images of widespread damage and public violence from France, Italy, and Spain have raised concerns among German politicians and police forces. They have warned that the protests may be exploited by extremists.

Andreas Raskow, head of the German Federal Police Union (GdP), has clearly stated that police forces will respond firmly to any riots and disturbances. He told the Rheinische Post that 'state and federal police will provide a decisive and strong response' to any issues. Raskow also pointed out that extremists may infiltrate among the protesters to 'attack the police' or 'simply cause destruction'.

While thousands are expected to participate in these protests, the actions of German youth are part of a broader movement seeking fundamental changes in the country's social and educational policies. The new generation is seeking their voice on important issues that affect their future and is striving to overcome the challenges faced by previous generations.
