Russia has arrested a German citizen on charges of mercenary activity and collaboration with the Ukrainian armed forces. This news was announced by the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) and is seen as a measure in the fight against what Moscow considers illegal foreign activities.

Details of the Arrest

According to the FSB, this individual is a former Bundeswehr soldier and a skilled marksman. The Russian intelligence agency did not disclose his name but released a short video of him speaking in German. This person served as a Bundeswehr soldier from 1996 to 2010 and participated in military missions in Afghanistan and Somalia.

The FSB claims that this man later acted as a mercenary fighter in the Syrian civil war and fought in Ukraine against Russian-backed insurgents in the east of the country from 2016 to 2018. The agency also alleged that he returned to Ukraine in 2025 and fought as a mercenary in the disputed Donetsk region.

Germany's Reaction and International Implications

The German government has not yet issued an official response to this news but has confirmed that it is aware of the reports and is following the matter. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry stated that the ministry cannot currently comment on the details of this case.

The arrest of this German comes at a time when Russia has detained numerous foreign nationals on various charges, including espionage and sabotage, since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These charges can carry long prison sentences.

Simultaneously with this arrest, Russia recently released a retired American teacher named Steven Hubbard, who had been in detention for several years. This release coincided with the visit of an American negotiator to St. Petersburg and followed several recent concessions to Russia and criticisms of Ukraine by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In the meantime, the FSB also arrested a Swedish citizen last week on charges of fighting on behalf of Kyiv. This individual is identified as the commander of a drone unit and was detained while attempting to illegally cross the border in the Pskov region.

Given the recent developments and multiple arrests of foreign nationals, concerns about human rights and individual freedoms in Russia have increased. This issue is particularly significant regarding charges that are widely based on ambiguous evidence.
