Germany's Ministry of Finance announced that due to a technical error, the increase in tobacco product taxes has been implemented earlier than scheduled. This tax increase, which was approved by parliament on Friday, was supposed to take effect at the beginning of 2024, but has officially been in effect since Tuesday.

Details of the Technical Error

Germany's Ministry of Finance stated: "A technical error occurred in the documentation regarding the effective date of these changes" and added that necessary corrections are underway. However, cigarette manufacturers are unable to pay the higher tax due to the lack of preparation for new tax stamps.

Consequences of the Tax Increase

This tax increase, which is expected to generate approximately 12 billion euros ($13.5 billion) in additional tax revenue for the government over the next four years, will significantly raise cigarette prices. According to forecasts, the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes, currently ranging from 8 to 10 euros, will rise to 12 to 14 euros.

Currently, about 19 percent of the German population smokes, and around 130,000 people die each year due to smoking-related illnesses. While health experts and politicians hope that the price increase will reduce cigarette consumption, the German Customs Union and the tobacco industry warn that smokers may turn to smuggled cigarettes.

Alice Weidel's Speech

Meanwhile, Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, will hold a press conference today in Strasbourg titled "A New Deal for Europe." She will be joined at this conference by two other AfD representatives, René Aust and Alexander Gauland.

As a new day begins in the news office in Bonn, the focus on the early implementation of the cigarette tax due to a technical error is the main topic of the day.
