Greg Stanton (Raphaël Glucksmann) gained the support and resources of the Socialist Party with a decisive victory in the French center-left primary elections. However, this 46-year-old Member of the European Parliament needs more support to advance his fully pro-European platform and reach the Élysée Palace.

Competition with Far-Right Candidates

Recent polls indicate that Stanton is trailing in the competition against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen and his two main rivals for entering the second round of the presidential election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Édouard Philippe. Both Mélenchon and Le Pen are seeking fundamental changes in Paris's relationship with Brussels, while Philippe has focused more on domestic issues.

To win the presidential election, Stanton, who leads the center-left party Place Publique, needs to attract several electoral segments simultaneously: leftist and centrist voters who are considering supporting Mélenchon's growing campaign.

The Necessity of Building New Coalitions

Christophe Clergeau, a Socialist representative, highlighted the importance of building coalitions for Stanton, stating, "It is up to him to build momentum and unite the Socialist family." Stanton and his allies hope that his strong victory in the primary is a sign of future successes.

In his victory speech, Stanton said, "The undeniable result is: I am the democratic left candidate tonight." Arnaud Daluoc, one of his party colleagues, remarked that this result is "far from a defeat" and reflects broad support for Stanton's platform.

However, Stanton faces serious challenges from Mélenchon and his party, La France Insoumise. He has refused to collaborate with this party due to statements accusing Mélenchon of using anti-Semitic tropes.

While Mélenchon is trying to garner support from the Greens, Stanton is also seeking backing from them. Tenda Lir, the Green candidate, has harshly criticized Stanton for not collaborating with La France Insoumise and participating in the primary elections.

Meanwhile, François Hollande, the last Socialist president elected in 2012, has shown signs of his willingness to run again, which could impact Stanton's future.
