Hurricane Isaias has claimed the lives of four people as it moves through the southern states of the United States. Two of the fatalities have been reported in Florida and two others in Alabama.

Damage and Emergency Status

The storm made landfall on Friday as a Category 2 hurricane near the city of Destin in Florida and is considered the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season. Florida, Alabama, and Georgia have declared a state of emergency due to the severity of the storm. Reports indicate that over 500,000 customers in Florida and Alabama are without power.

Government Actions and Warnings

The Florida Emergency Management has announced that about 5,000 soldiers and airmen from the Florida National Guard have been activated to support affected communities. The storm has brought heavy rainfall and dangerous winds, posing risks of flooding and tornadoes. It has torn roofs off buildings and uprooted trees.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm has weakened to a post-tropical cyclone and is moving toward the states of Tennessee and Kentucky, and then to West Virginia. In a recent update, the NHC warned of the potential for flash flooding and urban flooding, stating that there is a risk of landslides in the southern Appalachian region.

Additionally, waves generated by Isaias continue to impact the Gulf Coast of the United States, Mexico, and Cuba, with the possibility of dangerous sea conditions and rip currents. There have also been reports of potential tornadoes in eastern Georgia and North Carolina.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon has reached Category 4 strength and is moving toward the Pacific coast of Mexico. This storm is expected to make landfall on Sunday and impact the Puerto Vallarta area, a popular destination for American tourists.
