Alcohol consumption among individuals aged 50 to 64 in the United States has increased by more than one third from 2018 to 2024, while young people, particularly in Generation Z and Millennials, are generally reducing their alcohol consumption. According to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, only 54 percent of Americans currently consume alcohol, down from 67 percent in 2010.
Decrease in Alcohol Consumption Among Youth
From 2022 to 2024, overall alcohol consumption among Americans has decreased by 2 percent and heavy drinking has decreased by 8 percent. Generation Z is particularly leading in this regard, with their alcohol consumption decreasing by nearly 6 percent from 2022 to 2024. Young people have also reduced heavy drinking by one fifth. In contrast, older individuals have experienced a 4 percent increase in overall alcohol consumption and a 36 percent increase in heavy drinking.

Reasons for Increased Alcohol Consumption Among Older Individuals
The reasons for these changes are not yet clearly defined, but increased awareness of the health risks associated with alcohol may play a role in the reduction of alcohol consumption among youth. Alcohol is linked to 62 different diseases, including liver and heart diseases and various types of cancer. At the same time, research has shown that young people are more aware of the health risks associated with alcohol than older individuals.
This study also suggests that changes in social expectations and social pressures regarding alcohol consumption may also play a role in this trend. Young people are currently growing up in an environment where alcohol consumption is no longer highly acceptable, while older individuals grew up at a time when heavy drinking was normal.
In any case, reducing or quitting alcohol consumption can become a self-reinforcing habit and improve public health. Given that older individuals are at greater risk of complications from alcohol consumption, increasing public awareness about the risks associated with alcohol is essential for this age group.
