These statements were made following the passage of a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that imposes tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to purchase oil and gas from Russia, including India.
Details of the Bill and Its Implications
This bill now requires the signature of Donald Trump, the President of the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs of India responded to this legislation in a statement, saying: "India is committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people and will continue this through diverse sourcing and based on market developments."
The ministry also noted that it has raised this issue with American officials in recent months and expressed concern that the implications of this law will affect not only bilateral relations but also the global energy market.
India's Oil Supply and Relations with Russia
As the third-largest oil importer in the world, India is dependent on Russia as one of its largest suppliers and also as a long-term strategic and military partner. New Delhi has consistently defended this relationship and emphasized its necessity for meeting its energy needs while responding to external pressures to reduce these ties.
This bill, which has been passed following further sanctions on Russia's energy and defense sectors as well as senior officials of the country, allows Trump to impose secondary sanctions on countries that are dependent on purchasing Russian oil and gas in the form of tariffs. China and India are expected to be the primary targets of these measures.
Additionally, this bill expands sanctions on Iran as well.
