The United States Department of Homeland Security has launched an investigation into the shooting of a federal agent at a migrant from Venezuela in Austin, Texas. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon during a traffic checkpoint.
Protests Against the Shooting and Officials' Response
Immediately following the incident, protesters gathered at the scene to condemn the violent event. Videos shared on social media show traffic disruptions and the presence of protesters. Kirk Watson, the mayor of Austin and a member of the Democratic Party, stated at a news conference regarding the shooting that he is not surprised that ICE agents were involved in the incident. He added that local police were not involved in this incident.
Shooting Details and Condition of the Injured Immigrant
The shooting occurred near the intersection of Anderson Lane and Research Boulevard in Austin. According to reports, ICE agents had requested assistance from Texas police to track a blue Toyota Corolla. However, before police arrived, one of the ICE agents shot a man.
The man injured in the shooting is 28-year-old Wiber Rafael Garces Perez from Venezuela, who, according to his immigration attorney, had a work permit and entered the United States legally. This incident occurred while he was working for DoorDash.
According to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, this immigrant entered the United States illegally under the Biden administration and is currently in federal custody for deportation.
Garces Perez's attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, stated that his wife was unaware of her husband's condition and learned several hours after the shooting that he was in ICE custody. Congressman Greg Casar expressed concern over the possibility of Garces Perez's deportation and called for appropriate medical care for him.
Call for Independent Investigations and Accountability
The Travis County District Attorney's Office, which includes Austin, has called for cooperation with local police for investigations and requested the federal government to provide access to evidence. Additionally, Casar and Watson called for independent investigations into this matter. Casar tweeted that recent shootings in Austin have raised serious concerns and this trend must stop.
The shooting on Sunday follows another shooting in July in Houston, which resulted in the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen. These incidents highlight a troubling pattern of federal agents' activities in enforcing President Donald Trump's strict immigration policies.
